Imagine, if you will, lying under the darkness of an autumnal night with one you love. You are out on the edge of a worn down dirt road; some woods to your right with old, long since abandoned, train tracks in the distance; enjoying the calmness that their company gives you. Silence between you is only broken up by the ambient sounds of nature or the occasional car driving by. The world is one of the remnants of humanity, slowly fading as the earth reclaims that which it owns.
Time stretches endlessly, but eventually the night does grow old, and with it, the cold encroaches; so you pick yourselves up and begin walking back towards civilization, using one another’s embrace for warmth and comfort along the way. The world around you may be dark, cold, and full of unease, but you have them with you, so in the moment all feels loving & warm.
Time passes and dirt road becomes pavement, trees give way to buildings, and the artifice of civilization returns. You have made it back to the living world of humans, once more surrounded by the constant static that is human life.
After untangling from one another long enough for a door to be unlocked and to let yourselves inside, you are back in one another's arms. They escort you to a sofa where you are wrapped in blankets, before vanishing from your sight once more, telling you that they will be right back; that you have no need to worry.
As you impatiently await their return, you hear the noises of a kettle hissing, and before long, they are back to you with a pair of warm beverages. They carefully get onto the sofa with you and you begin a new warm embrace. Quietly, your mind settles. With their body beside yours, you know that you are safe, and slowly, you drift out of the conscious world, snugly and lovingly within their arms.
…
You are alone now. The years have passed and with it, life has moved forward. As you stare at the dim freeway ahead, thoughts of those younger days bring forth melancholic emotions. The forests have since been pushed back to make way for new buildings; where the calm darkness of nature once stood, the ever blinding brightness of human development has taken over. It has been years now, and yet you still yearn for that embrace once again. You miss the comfort; the feeling that you would never be alone. Lives have moved on though, and that world no longer exists. The warm familiarity this place once held is gone… Time moves on, with or without you… It will be a long night.
